Mum discovers where her toddler's socks really disappear while in the washing machine

Socks are notorious for disappearing in the washing machine and never being found ever again.

Well, if you've been looking for some socks, especially if they're tiny kids' socks, then it's likely they are still in the washing machine.

A mum was shocked to discover where her toddler's socks had actually gone after opening the front cover of her top loader washing machine.

The socks were sitting at the bottom of the washing machine unit, but outside the drum.

Rachel shared the moment she realised where they've been all this time in a TikTok.

"Oh... my... God," she said before gasping.

"Look at all those socks – oh my God that's where they go... there must be a hundred socks in there."

There were plenty of jokes in the comments section of the TikTok, including the dryer being falsely accused of eating the socks.

"Omg it was the washer not the dryer. We need to apologize," one joked.

"Now find out where all the Tupperware goes, I only have lids left," a TikTok user said.

"I'm sending this to my husband because how dare he accuse me of losing all the socks!" a woman commented.

The video has also given hope to people who have never recovered items they put in the washing machine.

"I wonder if my Harry Potter socks are in my washer I had them in the laundry basket and never seen them again," a woman wrote.

The reason socks are disappearing here is because they float up and over the side of the washing machine drum.

Appliance repair technician Renae explained why this happens in her own TikTok video.

"That usually happens if you're just dumping all of your laundry in instead of being careful about how you're putting it inside, because the drum where you're putting your clothing is enclosed by this big metal box," she said.

"But if you're just dumping all of your clothing in what can happen a lot of times is smaller items, especially like socks, can kind of find their way over the edge of the drum into the space between that metal body and the drum itself."

For those with a front loader washing machine, if you're losing things in the wash your best bet is to check the filter at the front of the machine. People have found money, jewellery and socks in this tiny section.
