Peg marks on clothes will no longer be a problem after trying these tips and tricks

The pleasure of freshly washed and line dried clothes gets a little tainted when you find pegs have left obvious marks.

While not permanent it can be frustrating to have to remove them, especially if you need that garment straight away.

Peg marks can be hidden or, better yet, prevented completely with a few tips and tricks.

Prevention

Inside out hang

The easiest way to prevent peg marks is to turn clothes inside out so the peg mark doesn't show on the right side of the item.

Washing clothes inside out is recommended to keep them in good condition longer anyway, so if you turn them inside out before tossing in the machine you won't have to remember to do it when you hang them on the clothesline.

Coat hangers

Skip pegging the clothing item altogether by hanging the wet garment on a plastic coat hanger. Then peg the coat hanger to the line so it doesn't blow off in the wind.

Using a coat hanger to line dry clothes also makes putting them away easier because they can be hung straight up with no folding necessary.

Just make sure you don't use flocked coat hangers for this as the dye can leach onto your wet clothes.

Stocking hack

This hack requires a pair of pantyhose that is threaded through a jumper or shirt so each sleeve has one of the legs in it and the waist is through the head hole.

Then the panty hose are pegged to the line from the toes and waist and the jumper adjusted to sit neatly over the pantyhose so that no pegs ever touch the clothing item itself.

Strategic pegging

Another option to hide peg marks where they won't be seen is to place the peg in spots like the underarm or very bottom of the shirt. 

For pants and skirts you can peg the back of the waist band where they will often be hidden by a shirt.

Combine this and the inside out method for extra effectiveness.

Removal

If you do need to remove peg marks from clothes there are some quick and easy ways to do it.

It helps that most peg marks are usually just indentations; they'll only be stains if the peg itself is dirty or rusty.

All you need to remove a peg mark is a hair dryer or iron and a spray bottle containing water.

Simply spray the peg mark with water – you can use the spray on your iron if you are choosing this option – and then iron over or dry with a hair dryer.

Make sure to choose the best heat setting on your iron for the fabric with the peg mark and a lower heat setting on your hair dryer.

If you have more time or the mark is on delicate fabric simply dampen the area with the mark and then allow it to air dry by laying flat on a clothes airer or hanging on a coat hanger. You could even drape the item over a dining chair until the spot is dry.
