There's nothing quite like the look of a classic white T-shirt, except when they start to get discoloured and faded.

When this happens to professional organiser Caroline Solomon, she uses a three-step method to get her clothes looking good as new again.

In a TikTok video, she shared her shirt whitening routine, which could be used for any white item that needs brightening.

Solomon starts by adding seven to eight litres of hot water into a bucket as well as two scoops of OxiClean White Revive.

OxiClean is a brand available in the US, but here in Australia you can use Napisan Vanish Oxiaction, Coles Ultra Oxy Advanced stain remover or any laundry product that has oxygen bleach (sodium percarbonate) as an active ingredient.

Once the oxygen bleach powder has dissolved in the hot water, then the clothes go in.

"Add your T-shirts and you're going to let that soak for six hours. Once the soaking is complete you're going to add a detergent pod, a little bit more OxiClean and then you're going to wash and dry your T-shirts as you normally would," Solomon said.

One key thing to note with this process is the use of hot water with the oxygen bleach, this helps the powder dissolve better and activate the bleaching process faster.

The New Yorker does this with her whites every few months, especially if, like a lot of us, she's washed her dark and light coloured clothes together.

You can see how well this process works by comparing the colour of the shirts at the start of the video as they've clearly gone from dingy to bright white.

Another white washing hack is to dry your white items in the sun as it is a natural bleach.

However, there are also things you can do to prevent white items becoming grey over time.

The most simple is to separate white items from coloured ones when washing because dye in darker garments can transfer to white items and make them look grey.

It also helps to separate laundry loads based on how dirty the items are to prevent dirt transferring in the wash.

And as always avoid overloading the machine so that all items can wash freely and thoroughly.
