The $8 Kmart buy making outdoor dining more fun and fabulous for summer

Entertaining outdoors is one of the great joys of the Australian summer, and if there's one thing that makes these gatherings feel extra fun and special it's the details.

And the detail you'll be seeing in homes all across Australia this summer is Mediterranean-inspired dinnerware featuring fruits like lemons and strawberries.

So when planning my first outdoor Sunday lunch of the season I couldn't go past one gorgeous Kmart range to bring the fun, flair and, of course, fruity style.

I'm going simple for this table setting because the fruits dinnerware has so much pizazz I can even go without a tablecloth.

Though if you want to get even more fruity the lemon tablecloth for $10 is the perfect option. There is also a matching four-pack set of lemon napkins for $5 to complete the look.

This lunch is just going to be cold meats and salad with bread rolls for everyone to make their own sandwich.

So the fruits platter for $8 is absolutely perfect, with plenty of space – 31.5cm long by 45.2cm wide, to be exact – for all the ingredients for people to serve themselves at the table.

I also plan on using it in the future for potatoes and sausages that've been cooked on the barbecue. Then I'll get the fruits salad bowl, which is also $8, to pop a garden salad into, it's also $8 and a generous 31cm diameter size.

There are so many other possibilities for the platter and bowl, including appetisers, desserts and pasta – they will definitely get a good work out over summer, and being made from melamine they'll withstand use after use after use.

In addition to the servingware, the fruits side plates set is all I need for this small gathering. It includes six plates with two red lemon plates, two green strawberry plates and two blue cherry plates and costs just $10.

For future lunches the six pack of fruits dinner plates for $10 will be a great addition and I can already see the sausages, salad and potatoes on it with a soft and fluffy white bread roll on the fruits side plate next to it.

There's always room for dessert so even with this small, casual gathering matching bowls are needed for ice cream with – you guessed it – fruit salad! The six pack of fruits bowls is also $10 and features the same gorgeous red lemon, green strawberry and blue cherry details.

And it's not a gathering without something to drink and with a matching set of fruits tumblers for $10, I couldn't resist completing the theme with them.

There was only one addition to this simple, yet eye-catching table setting that wasn't part of the theme and that's the placemats.

Not using a tablecloth on this occasion means they're a must so I went with the sand weave placemats, which are $1.75 each, as the neutral colour and subtle texture goes with just about any style and can even be used for regular meals.

With all my new summer dinnerware sorted I couldn't wait to set it all up to see how it would look on the back deck table and I'm completely obsessed with how fun and colourful it looks.

Now all I need is the weekend to arrive and summer entertaining can begin.
