I love the idea of completely transforming tables into a decorative scene for special days like Christmas.

But usually life gets in the way and I end up far too busy to actually pull off the look I wanted to create.

This year is different because I have started early and already come up with a stunning Christmas Day table setting.

I have used a selection of gorgeous Kmart products which started at just $2 for the Gold Look Wavy Charger Plate.

The theme I have gone with is an elegant gold, white and green colour scheme and I'm thrilled with how it all looked once I put it together.

I started with the classic White Holly Jacquard Tablecloth, which costs $10 and can be used for many Christmases to come thanks to its neutral look.

Then I layered on what is a standout feature of the tablescape, the $8 Gold Look Scribble Table Runner. It really pops against the white tablecloth and contrasts beautifully with the green products.

Next I placed the Green Wavy Placemats, which cost $3.50 each, down at each place setting.

These are a great find because the green will work for any occasion so they can be used time and again before next Christmas rolls around.

Plus, they're made of polypropylene so only need a wipe with a damp cloth after use meaning less laundry to do.

Then it was time to try out what is my new tablescaping obsession; charger plates. These are a base plate that adds a decorative touch to formal place settings.

I've been aware of these for a while now and seen them beautifully styled by the Kmart team at various events and decided now is the time to try them.

Gosh they look stunning and make a huge difference to the overall look of the table by tying in the gold table runner to the place setting. They also elevate the dinnerware and really highlight the beautiful tree design.

The charger plates are $2 each and are so easy to feature and care for, all you really need to do is give them a wipe after use since they're purely decorative.

Then for the most important element of any table setting – the dinnerware. I have chosen the $25 12 piece Natural Trees Dinner Set, which is made from stoneware – a material that gives the bowls and side and dinner plates an incredible feel and quality.

After the green and white of the dinnerware it was time to add another pop of gold with the four pack Gold Look Metallic Napkins for $5. I paired the napkins with the four pack Gold Look Napkin Rings, which also cost $5.

Napkin folding is an art form and there are so many creative options to try but I went simple by turning the napkin so that it was a diamond shape and rolling up from one corner. Then I folded the napkin over and inserted into the napkin ring.

With that the base of my table setting is done and looks beautiful just like this.

The light up garland adds a little something extra and will form the base of a centrepiece still in the works. Rachael Gavin

But I'm planning to add little bits and pieces to the centrepiece over the next few weeks to really step it up this year.

For the base of the centrepiece I'll be using the 5m Light Up Green Christmas Tinsel, which costs $10. I have trialled this in a wavy pattern and think it looks beautiful when lit up.

To this I'm thinking of adding the LED Christmas Tree Candle Set for $13, the three pack Standing Reindeer in green for $12 and various sizes of baubles in the colour theme.

What I've come up with for the table so far makes me incredibly excited to sit down to Christmas lunch and enjoy the ambience created by the extra details.
