Clever $15 Kmart hack creates extra storage in spot you'd never think to use

Storage is an issue in every room, but particularly the toilet, which typically has so little space we end up having to put supplies like spare toilet paper in another cupboard.

One woman has come up with the perfect solution for storing toilet rolls and period products by making use of dead space.

Using a $15 adjustable shelf from Kmart, she made a shelf just above the toilet door and shared a photo of it in the Kmart Home Decor & hacks Australia Facebook group.

It's a brilliant hack that's especially useful for renters and people who don't own power tools because the shelf uses tension to stay in place between the two walls.

"Did this above the toilet door. So as you look into the toilet you can't see it but it's still accessible if you run out. Kmart adjustable shelf. Seems pretty secure too," she captioned her Facebook post.

The hack was a huge hit with Kmart fans, with some finding out about the adjustable shelf for the first time.

"Need! How?!" one commented.

"Have always wondered why more don't do this," a woman said.

"Ohh that's clever," another wrote.

However, some pointed out that as clever as the hack is it would be hard for shorter people to reach easily

In response, some Kmart fans joked those too short to reach get a stick or a pick-up tool to use.

Meanwhile, another was worried about bugs making a home inside the toilet rolls.

For others, the hack solved a very annoying problem, "Great idea... Will stop the boys from peeing on them beside the toilet."

On a serious note, a few who had bought adjustable shelves mentioned there's had fallen down.

"Yep they didn't hold for very long. My partner ended up screwing timber underneath to hold it," one said.

But the woman who came up with hack said the key is in how tight you pull it against the walls.

"Mines pretty secure even without the things under it. I got my husband to pull it as tight against the wall as he could while I tightened the screws," she said.

Adjustable shelves using tension to stay in place are also great under the sink and in other small areas, like between a dryer and cupboard in the laundry.

If a shelf doesn't fit, tension rods can also be useful for storage with hanging baskets or items that have a handle.
