How an $8 Kmart office buy transformed my kitchen cupboards

Last year we were moving house, and the kitchen in our new place had much less cupboard space than the last.

Of course, a clean-out and declutter was warranted but there were plenty of items I needed to hold on to, and something in particular I had long needed a solution for: storing my platters and serving dishes.

I had been following Aussie home organising expert Anita Birges for a while, and previously used tips from her @mise_en_place_aus Instagram page to transform my pantry and linen cupboards. Maybe she could help me with my storage dilemma?

So I began scrolling through Birges' previous Instagram posts until I found it: a hack that used an $8 Kmart office buy for storing kitchen items.

Birges described it as one of her favourite kitchen organising hacks and promised it was going to "completely transform" your cupboard.

And while Birges' demonstration used baking trays, I was eager to test it out with the heavy platters I owned to see if it would work just as well.

The first task was to head off to Kmart to find the rack.

It can be a little tricky to find in store as it often sells out. You can search for it online where it is called a file rack.

It comes in both black and white.

I bought two and headed home to test them out.

While Birges suggests those wanting more storage can use cable ties to join two together, I decided to place mine at either end of the cupboard in question and began stacking my platters in.

I must say I was amazed at how well it worked, and I was able to easily store five large, heavy platters upright.

Next, I decided to store my smaller serving platters in the other file.

In the space in between, I added my large serving bowls and then in front I ended up adding small serving dishes and condiment bowls.

I cannot tell you what a game-changer this has been and I wish I had done it sooner.

While I had ample space in my old kitchen, I had always stacked my platters on top of each other.

Not only was it unsightly, it left the platters prone to becoming damaged.

If you needed to get one out that was near or at the bottom, you had to either lift all the ones on top or risk chipping or breaking them while trying to remove the one you want.

It was the same when putting them back. It was also noisy!

Now, getting a platter out is easy.

Armed with my newfound knowledge, I returned to Kmart to purchase one more for my chopping boards.

I have also managed to store a medium sized frying pan and two glass lids in the same file.

While the lids are round and can slip out if you go to remove something, they are generally secure, and I am able to store a couple of other items in front.
