The $49 Kmart buy that transformed my bedroom
There's nothing like a new quilt cover to make a room feel fresh again. Rachael Gavin

I have a confession to make; despite my job involving writing tips on making homes more beautiful my bedroom has looked a little sad for quite some time.
The main reason is purely indecisiveness because I just could not choose a quilt cover that I liked enough. None seemed to tick all the boxes of what I was looking for.
The other reason is the high cost of some quilt covers, plus I needed a new quilt, and so any time I was close to getting a quilt cover I talked myself out of it due to the cost.
So I've just been using a quilted coverlet blanket, which does the trick in summer anyway, until I spotted the budget-friendly and super cute ric rac cotton reversible quilt cover set in Kmart.
My bedroom before the makeover was mostly practical because I couldn't decide on a quilt cover. Rachael Gavin
It's just $49 for a queen size (single is $40, double is $45 and king is $55), made of my preferred bedding material cotton and features colours I love.
The design is also interesting in that the lilac and white striped side, which has a ruched texture is very easy on the eyes. But it also has a a wow factor with bright pink ric rac, so you have impact as well as subtlety.
This quilt cover is also reversible with the other side featuring only bold pink stripes. It allows you to add another pop of colour and pattern by flipping the top of the quilt over slightly, as I have done, or if you prefer this side you can use it instead of the lilac design.
Another great thing about this quilt is that there is enough going on design and colour-wise that you don't need to add lots of cushions and throws for it to look good – white pillowcases on either regular sized pillows or Euro cushions work perfectly.
So with my new quilt ready to go I threw off my coverlet and popped the ric rac one on.

The quilt is bold enough that it looks good with just white pillowcases behind it. Rachael Gavin
Already my room looked brighter and more inviting, but inspired by the quilt cover I continued making over the rest of the room.
I've had my bedside table for about 13 years and the small pink lamp possibly a lot longer than that so it was time for a change.
For a bedside table I settled on the $39 white textured side table because of its simplicity and calming shape. It also didn't take much to put together – just a few screws in the top and you're ready to go.
The side table was easy to put together and looks super cute. Rachael Gavin
It wasn't hard to choose a new lamp because the trending lamp of the moment is the $19 Nico portable rechargeable lamp. There are several colours of this lamp available but I went with pink to best coordinate with the new bedding.
A rechargeable lamp is perfect for this spot as I have to use an extension cord to connect my old lamp to the power point on the adjacent wall. Now I don't need to worry about that at all.
Following the styling 'rule of three' to make this side table look gorgeous I decided to get a vase and fill it with Kmart's incredible artificial flowers.
I chose the $10 textured clear vase and added the $14 artificial pastel poppies and the $14 artificial ranunculus flower bunch.
With flowers, a lamp and a candle the bedside table is styled beautifully. Rachael Gavin
These flowers come with long stems so I used a wire cutter tool to shorten them so they fit in the vase perfectly. I also slotted each flower in between two stems of another so they could stand up on their own without using floristry tools like a frog or cage.
To finish it off I popped a cute pastel pink embossed candle, which is $13, on the table.
And with that the space is completely refreshed, brighter and looking more modern than it did before.
