Refreshing a space in the home isn't just about how it looks, it's also about how it feels.
While furniture and paint can do a lot for the feel of the room, you don't have to go that far to make a difference.
There is one type of décor that has a huge impact because it works on both a visual and aromatic level.

That homewares item is candles, which look and smell good whether they are lit or not. But of course lighting them greatly increases both the look and fragrance they have.
"The gentle movement of the flame mimics natural light, which our brains associate with comfort and relaxation," a Kmart spokesperson explained.
"Additionally, candles often carry subtle scents that trigger emotional responses and memories, enhancing feelings of calmness or happiness. This combination of light and fragrance creates a multi-sensory experience that influences mood."

The $13 Home Retreat candles are particularly effective at providing the visual and fragrant impact we're looking for.
The elegant glass vessel is translucent and comes in four different colours and fragrance combinations. All have a double wick for double the glow.
The red has an oakwood vanilla bean tonka fragrance, green has a vetiver smoked cedar aroma, brown has a mahogany teakwood vanilla scent and grey has a bergamot blossom musk fragrance.

While all candles will have an impact on the mood of a space, you can be even more specific about how you want that room to make you feel by selecting specific fragrance combinations .
"Different scents have the power to influence how we experience a space. Fresh, uplifting aromas can create an energising atmosphere, while warm or soothing fragrances help promote relaxation and comfort," a Kmart spokesperson said.
"By choosing scents that align with the purpose or mood of a space, whether it's calm, vibrant, or inviting, we can enhance the overall sensory experience and make environments feel more enjoyable."

The recommended Home Retreat candle for the living room is oakwood vanilla bean and tonka.
"The oakwood adds a subtle earthiness, while vanilla bean introduces a smooth sweetness that feels warm and welcoming. Tonka rounds out the fragrance with a hint of richness, creating an atmosphere that feels relaxed yet refined, ideal for shared moments," they said.

For the bedroom try vetiver smoked cedar for a combination of earthy and woody notes.
"The Smoked Cedar candle is perfect for creating a warm, grounding atmosphere. Its rich, woody notes combined with a subtle smokiness evoke feelings of comfort," they said.
"Cedar is often associated with calm and stability, helping to reduce stress and promote relaxation, while the smoky undertone adds depth and a luxurious, retreat-like vibe."

The bathroom can benefit from mahogany teakwood vanilla for warm, sophisticated and inviting fragrance that's not overpowering.
In the kitchen and dining space the best fragrance is bergamot blossom musk, which is fresh and uplifting.
"Its crisp notes create a welcoming atmosphere, perfect for socialising or relaxing with family. Bergamot's clean and vibrant scent helps keep the room feeling light and airy, making it ideal for open spaces where you want a refreshing and inviting vibe," they said.

Even though enjoying the effect of a candle on a space is as simple as lighting the wicks, there are a couple of things you can do to enhance the fragrance and performance of the candle long term.
The first time you use the candle let it burn until the pool of melted wax reaches the edge of the jar.
"This helps avoid tunnelling and ensures a better melt," a Kmart spokesperson says.
Having candles stay lit for about three to four hours at a time is recommended for performance and to maintain the fragrance.
Using a heat resistant tray or surface will protect furniture from wax drips and stains.
