The $4 Kmart buy making it easier to clean the shower

I write about cleaning for a living but even I avoid cleaning the shower as often as I should because of how tiring it can be.

It means I'm always on the lookout for hacks, tips and products that make cleaning the shower easier.

My latest find is Kmart's $4 bathroom glove, which has a scourer surface on one side and a microfibre cloth on the other.

The first impression I had of the bathroom glove is that it has a nice large surface area, especially compared to many other sponges and scourers.

This is a huge plus for me, especially after moving into a new place with taller and wider shower glass screens.

When I put it on I also noticed that the elastic wrist on the glove wasn't too big for my tiny wrist, so it won't slip off during use.

Now I know my shower doesn't look that dirty in photos but I know from standing inside it that it was coated in a layer of soap scum with a few splotches of shampoo and body wash around it, so it was ready for a clean.

To use the bathroom glove I squeezed a small drizzle of dishwashing liquid onto the rough side and then wet the glove in warm water.

After working the glove into a bit of a lather I started cleaning using the technique of scrubbing left to right and top to bottom, moving my hand in circles all the way down the shower glass.

I quickly realised where the bathroom glove really excels, especially in contrast to sponges and scourers.

With the bathroom glove you can actually feel the parts of the glass and tiles that have residue on them because you are using the glove with your hand.

This makes it easier to know where the dirty spots and soap scum is and allows you to use more pressure with your hand as needed.

It means less going over spots that you can't easily see when you're scrubbing and if that isn't something to smile about I don't know what is.

And once the glass feels smooth again you can move on to the next bit.

Every now and then while using the bathroom glove I added more water, but only once needed a bit more dishwashing liquid.

Each time I finished a panel I used a plastic jug to pour water over the soap suds to rinse the glass and tiles.

If your shower head doesn't detach from the wall a plastic jug is a huge help for rinsing. Kmart sells a 1L plastic measuring jug for $1.75, which will do the trick brilliantly.

Another quick rinsing option is to fill a spray bottle with water and spritz the soap suds with it. You can get a 600ml spray bottle for just $2 and you'll be thankful you did when you realise how much water spills and splashes you'll prevent while cleaning.

After the rinsing stage I always finish with a squeegee.

The best technique I've come across for using a squeegee is to move it across the surface in an 'S' shape, going across from left to right and then curving it at the edge and down before going back to the left side.

Squeegees cost $2 and for that small amount make a big difference not only to how your shower glass looks after cleaning, they also help prevent soap scum and hard water buildup and mould when used after the last shower of the day.

So they're a worthwhile addition to your shower and I keep mine in there all the time so I can use it after I have a shower.

With the shower glass and tiled wall panels now clean and the bathroom glove still on my hand I decided to try it on my basin, which was looking a lot dirtier than the shower.

It was much easier to use on the basin than holding a cloth and only needed a quick scrub to get rid of the dust and soap splotches.

I finished it off with a dry microfibre cloth, which is a particular must for the tap because it polishes it up nice and shiny after cleaning. Microfibre cloths tackle all sorts of chores and you can get a pack of 20 for $8 at Kmart.

With that my shower glass, wall tiles and basin were clean for another week or two.

I'm even thinking of leaving the bathroom glove in the shower for quick touch ups while I'm having a shower. It would only need warm water for this and make the weekly or fortnightly clean even easier.

It'd also be great for a quick scrub of the basin after I've brushed my teeth at night. I already grab a cloth for this so it'd be easy to swap in.

Cleaning the bathroom glove is easy too, you just need to toss it in the washing machine with your other bathroom cleaning cloths and dry it on the clothesline.
