The one time you don't need to worry about yellow leaves on your indoor plant

Yellow leaves are one of the biggest causes of concern for houseplant owners who fear it's a sign that something is wrong with their green baby.

And often it is, from not enough water to too much water, too little or not enough light and root rot, there are many potential reasons an indoor plant might be showing signs of distress.

However, expert and plant store owner Tanner Mitchell, who is known on social media as @tannertheplanter, has revealed we can stop worrying if the yellow leaves are in a specific spot.

In an Instagram reel featuring an anthurium hookerai with yellow leaves at the base near the soil, Mitchell explained why this isn't a problem.

"These yellow leaves you're seeing down here are actually a good thing," he said holding some of the plant's bottom leaves.

"So what's happening right here is it's just old leaves that are dying off. So on this plant, the newest leaves come out from the very centre right here and then the oldest leaves are located nearest the bottom. This is going to be the same for pretty much every houseplant that you have: trees, trailing plants, upright plants like this, all of your oldest leaves are nearest the soil."

To deal with the yellow leaves on your plant all you need to do is cut them off – just remember to sanitise your pruners with something like isopropyl alcohol first to prevent transferring any plant diseases.

Mitchell recommends cutting the leaves off as close as possible to the base of each leaf's stem.

If the yellow leaves on your plant are located in the centre where the new growth is emerging, then that is something to worry about and likely means the plant has root rot.

Mitchell's Instagram and TikTok accounts are full of helpful information and tips for caring for houseplants.

In another video he shared three plant "problems" that are completely normal so that beginner indoor plant owners can relax and enjoy their plants more.

The "normal problems" include dead leaves at the bottom of a plant, scarring on leaves and flowers dying, which Mitchell said are all part of the lifecycle of plants.
