How to DIY your own mushroom lamp for just $12 using Ikea products

Mushroom lamps have been trending for a couple of years now, and they continue to be popular in 2023.

The lamps, which very much look like you'd think they would, typically feature a cylindrical base and a bowl like top.

Some of these lamps look more like vintage Murano lamps, with a bulbous base and a traditional lampshade shape on top.

But these lamps can be expensive and range in price from $30 to $200, so they can be out of reach if the budget is tight.

However, an interior stylist has revealed how easy and affordable it is to make your own for just $12.

Fiona showed how to make a mushroom lamp in a tutorial on her Instagram page @fi.homemuse after watching another content creator make one.

"I knew I wanted a mushroom lamp, and this isn't my original idea but when I saw it over at @interior_byvendela I knew I wanted to make one myself for my new feature shelfie wall!" she said.

To make the lamp Fiona used a black Ramsta LED mini-lamp for $3 (the white version is $6), the Karaff clear glass carafe for $2.50 and the Blanda clear glass serving bowl for $6.

She also needed cling wrap, masking tape and Duramax spray paint.

Fiona began by covering the carafe and bowl in plastic wrap and taping it in place before spray painting the inside of both items white. This is what will give the lamp a translucent effect.

Then she covered the lights on the mini-lamp with masking tape and spray painted the cover white to blend in with the rest of the lamp.

Once the paint was dry, Fiona stuck the mini lamp in the centre of the bowl using the stick-on feature already included with the lamp.

To finish she popped the bowl on top of the carafe and placed it on her shelf before turning it on.

"The easiest DIY yet fits my home vibe perfectly! Now I think I wanted to make another one for our bedroom too," she said.

Fiona's followers were blown away by the simple, budget-friendly project and some even want to try it themselves.

"Oh my goodness, this is so cute!" one said.

"What a clever idea! Love this," a follower posted.

"This is so soft yet so gorgeous. I actually may do this one!!" commented another.
