Planting a bulb lasagna this autumn will set you up for a pot full of beautiful blooms all spring

Spring bulbs are traditionally planted close together in groups of the one variety in pots or mass garden bed displays.

But in recent years, a particular type of container arrangement with a fun name has become a huge trend in the gardening community, promising a longer blooming season and a pot full of different colours and shapes of flowers.

That bulb planting display is known as as a 'bulb lasagna' thanks to the layers in the pot, much like the dish of the same name.

By planting layers of bulbs that flower at different times in spring you'll get blooms throughout the season. You can also plant a mix of early, mid and late flowering blooms to get a contrasting display during each period.

Spring bulbs are best planted in autumn, and with early to mid-autumn recommended for most of Australia, the Easter and Anzac Day long weekends are perfect timing for bulb planting projects like this.

Ash Makin, Bunnings national greenlife buyer, shared the steps for planting a beautiful bulb lasagne with 9honey Living.

How to plant a bulb lasagne

Prepare the container

Makin recommends using a deep, wide pot of at least 30cm by 30cm and filling it with quality potting mix up to half way.

First layer

"Place larger, later-flowering bulbs like late-season tulips at the bottom and cover with a layer of potting soil," he says.

Second layer

This row is for your midseason bulbs like hyacinths.

"Plant bulbs... ensuring they are staggered and not directly above the bottom layer," Makin advises.

Third layer

This is the top layer of your bulb lasagne, which should include bulbs that will flower first.

"Add smaller, early flowering bulbs like daffodils or crocuses, and cover with more potting soil," he says.

Final step

Water the pot and place in a sunny area.

"It is best to water bulbs thoroughly after planting to help them settle into the soil comfortably. During the growing season, keep the soil moist but not waterlogged, by watering them more  frequently during dry spells," Makin says.

Now all you have to do is wait for the blooms to start appearing as winter draws to a close and spring arrives.

Alternative container arrangements

Instead of the lasagna bulb look, you can plant bulbs with different blooming types in separate pots so that when one flower starts fading another pot is ready to bloom.

You can also plant several bulbs of one type in a pot and repeat for other varieties for a mass pot display. Or you could do all tulips or all daffodils in pots, creating variation by grouping colours or petal details.

Another option that will give you colour in the pot while you're waiting for your bulbs to grow is to plant pansies and violas on top of the bulbs. Planting them in spaces where the bulbs aren't underneath also means you'll get a mix of those flowers amongst your bulbs in spring.

Best spring bulbs for pots

Most spring bulbs can be planted in pots but some tend to look more striking than others.

"There are certain bulbs that are particularly well suited for pots, including tulips, daffodils, crocuses, and hyacinths," Makin says.

"These types of bulbs are excellent for pots due to their compact size  and vibrant blooms which can add a splash of colour and charm garden."
