Janitor's video of gross computer keyboard clean will have you rushing to scrub your own

Whether they're part of our laptops or separate to our computer, keyboards tend to get very dirty with all the typing we do on them each day.

Then there's the food we eat while we work, not to mention all the breathing and talking we do over them.

But, like phones, they're one of those items we don't think to clean as often as we should.

If you haven't cleaned your own in a while you'll certainly want to after watching a TikTok posted by janitor Brandon Pleshek.

He decided to give his friend's keyboard a clean after noticing it was dirty and filmed the process so we could see how it was done.

To clean the keyboard Pleshek takes a bottle of 70 per cent isopropyl alcohol, which he poured into a small bowl, and some cotton buds/tips.

After dipping the cotton buds in isopropyl alcohol he rubs them around and in between every single key.

Then he scrubs the top of each key with the cotton bud, making sure to switch to a clean one each time it gets dirty.

Once that's finished, Pleshek pours some isopropyl alcohol on a microfibre cloth and wipes the keyboard with it.

The video also shows the amount of dust and grime that builds up on our keyboards over time.

In one close up of the video you can see the shift key go from off-white to white as Pleshek rubs a cotton swab back and forth. He then lifts up the cotton tip to show the dark gunk that has been removed.

The TikTok video got plenty of people thinking about their own gross keyboards.

"This is timely. My MacBook is a gd mess bc it is also my personal cookbook," a woman commented.

"Me needing to do the dishes "nope… this is more important now," wrote a TikToker.

"My work keyboard is atrocious," another said.

There was also a tip for what type of isopropyl alcohol to use.

"I used to work in a computer repair store and it's better to use 99% iso as the 70% has water in it that can damage things," one said.

Isopropyl alcohol is worth having on hand at home as it is also recommended to clean phone screens. It can be purchased from stores like the chemist, Bunnings and Officeworks.

Another important step of cleaning your keyboard is to pick it up and bang the corners gently on your desk to remove food crumbs and bits of hair. This should be done before you start wiping the keyboard – just remember to wipe the crumbs off your desk too.
