Gardener's $18 Kmart hack will have you organised for year-round planting

A gardener has found an "awesome solution" for storing hundreds of seed packets using a product designed for a completely different purpose.

Wanting a seed library organisation system without the price tag, the man's girlfriend suggested he try Kmart's $18 photo and craft storage box.

He shared the find in a TikTok video on his page @culinary.gardener.

The case-like plastic tub includes 12 individual snap-lock cases that are just the right size to fit most seed packets.

"Kmart Australia has brought out the best new product for gardeners and it's not even in the garden section... I went in store, picked one up and couldn't believe how perfect it is for it," he said in the clip.

"I've organised my seeds here by plant type but it occurred to me afterwards that since there's 12 you could also just organise them by month, so that on one afternoon you could completely sort out your entire year of seeds that you need to sow at each given time. Just pull it out at the first weekend of each month, sow it and then you're growing for the full year without even thinking about it."

The idea to use the photo and craft storage box for seeds was well received, with some people who viewed the TikTok commenting that they've been using something like this too.

"I need to hear this! thank you!" one said.

"Ohh you sold me with sorting by month! I was first like nah I like my little pastel boxes," a fellow gardener commented.

"I work at a Nursery and we store our fern spore varieties in these, very handy," another wrote.

A couple of people also shared a tip for keeping seeds, suggesting that the box should be stored in a fridge to help the seeds germinate better.

"Store your seeds in the vegetable tray in your fridge. They will last longer and are way easier to strike," a gardener said.

"Can confirm, have germinated 10 year old seeds by storing in fridge," a viewer said in response.

Others shared their own hacks for the storage unit including electronic cords and cables, medicines and teaching supplies.
