Getting rid of clutter tends to be harder the more emotional attachment you have to things.

Potential usefulness is also a barrier that keeps items in your home even if you never end up using them.

But there are things that are easier to get rid of than others and give you a kickstart and boost of motivation to progress further with decluttering.

Professional organiser Rachel Burditt revealed 10 of these items in a TikTok video, referring to them as "easy wins".

"Here are 10 items that you can get rid of in your home today that I can absolutely promise you you're not going to miss," she said.

"Now these aren't going to be taking up a lot of space in your home but they're still taking up some space. If you can get rid of the small things, the larger things will follow."

The first item Burditt suggested is one we can all relate to; chargers for devices we don't have any more.

These cords and adapters seem to end up all over the house or sometimes in one big tangled mess but if you've upgraded your phone or tablet and they don't fit then there is no point keeping them because they'll never be of use again.

"You do not need them, please recycle them, get rid of them" she said.

The second on the list is another we've all built up large collections of and that's water bottles that go unused.

"How many water bottles do you need? How much water are you drinking a day? You do not need all of them," she said.

Third is broken umbrellas and fourth is stretched hair ties, both things we can't fix and aren't usable so we might as well toss them out.

Next on the list is candle jars that have burnt down.

"Unless you're gonna do a DIY project with it – which I doubt you are going to – please get rid of it and recycle it," Burditt said.

Candle jars can become lovely trinket jars if cleaned out or be reused by pouring melted wax in, but if you don't think you'll ever get around to it best to follow Burditt's advice.

Another item the professional organiser recommends to get rid of is mismatched earrings.

"Those ones that you've lost but you're keeping it just in case. You've had it for three years please get rid of that," she said.

Old receipts are another thing Burditt said we can easily get rid of unless we need them for tax purposes.

However, given that receipts tend to fade easily you can always photograph them with your phone and save them that way so you can get rid of all those piles and boxes of receipts.

Jeans that don't fit anymore are also on Burditt's list.

"There's nothing worse than wearing a pair of jeans that cut you in half, please just sell them, recycle them or [take them to a charity store]. You don't need them in your life," she said.

Socks with holes in them made the list too. The only reason to keep these is to use them for cleaning, but if you have no plans for that then it's time to bin them, or better yet donate them to an organisation that recycles fabric.

Rounding out the list is dried out pens and markers, the ones we try to use and for some reason put back in the box or pen cup thinking they might magically work again another day.
