When it comes to the dirtiest items in our homes many of us would think of things like the toilet, shower and kitchen sink.

However, a housekeeper has revealed a surprising appliance is actually quite high on that list.

And if you haven't cleaned it in a while you should get that done sooner rather than later because you'll need it when summer hits.

That item is the ceiling fan and the last thing anyone wants when seeking the cool relief of the fan is to breathe in a heap of dust.

Vanesa Amaro shared the tip in a TikTok video where she recommended regular cleaning of the appliance rather than one big deep clean because of how long it will take to do.

"As a housekeeper I can tell you that one of the dirtiest things in people's houses are the fans, and I don't know if it's because we tend not to look up and we don't see how dirty they are or we never turn them off, which is why we don't see how dirty they are – but they're really dirty," she said.

"Don't let things get so dirty to the point that you don't even know how to clean it or you don't even know where to start."

In the TikTok Amaro cleans a ceiling fan using a long-handled duster before getting a step ladder so she can wipe the fan blades with cleaning spray and a microfibre cloth.

The reactions to Amaro's message about ceiling fans resonated with many, though they don't seem any more likely to clean them.

"The other side of the fan is not my business," a woman commented.

"I'm too scared to look at my fans!!!" one said.

"I dont want to look at my fan. Its gross, I know. On my to do list," a TikToker wrote.

Another acknowledged how hard it is to keep fans clean.

"I clean mine at least once a month but it does blow my mind how a moving [object] accumulates dust," they said.

For anyone who doesn't have a long-handled duster to clean their ceiling fans with, there is another way to do it using an item you already have in your home.

All you need to do is grab a pillowcase and carefully put it over the blade of the ceiling fan. Then just slide it off, as demonstrated in the video above.

The best bit about this hack is it stops any of the dust from the fan falling down onto the floor (or you).

For an extra clean you can spray the inside of the pillowcase with a mix of vinegar and water first. This will help to move any stubborn dust or marks on the fan.

While you're cleaning the fan take a second to check the switch on it. This switch dictates the direction the fan spins so that in summer the cool air goes down and in winter the warm air is redistributed around the room.

"Most ceiling fan summer modes spin counter-clockwise to direct cool air to the ground. Blade design also contributes to the downward movement of cool air," explained fan company Martec in an article on its website.

"If you are not feeling cool air, then it is possible your fan is spinning the wrong way, in winter mode. The summer/winter mode can be found as a switch on the side of the fan or on the remote control."
