Professional cleaner reveals the missed step that makes shower glass buildup so much easier to remove

Shower glass doors and screens are notoriously hard to get looking crystal clear and even harder to keep them that way.

But according to a professional cleaner, the secret to removing soap scum could be all in what you do before you start applying a cleaning product.

Rhonda Wilson, a cleaner with 20 years experience and the lead cleaner at FreshSpace Cleaning, has shared her tips for how to restore cloudy shower glass and keep them that way.

She told the Daily Express that the cleaning task is made easier by wiping with a damp microfibre cloth before you start cleaning to loosen up the buildup.

And if you want it to be even easier, she recommends rinsing the shower glass with hot water first.

"Limescale is that chalky stuff forming on your shower screen. It's natural for it to build up, but with a bit of care and regular cleaning, you can prevent and get rid of it," Wilson said.

After you've rinsed the glass or given it a wipe over with a damp cloth, Wilson recommends spraying with white vinegar and letting that sit on the surface for 10 to 15 minutes.

If you find the vinegar drying out before that time is up, especially in the hot Australian weather, you can spray again as needed to keep the product working its magic on that build up.

Then to finish rinse the vinegar off and remove excess water with a squeegee.

To keep the shower glass looking sparkling for longer between cleans Wilson revealed a hack that will not only make the screens and door look good, but smell good too.

"Use a cloth with a bit of lemon oil to create a water-repellent layer that prevents limescale," she said.

Another way to prevent both hard water and soap scum buildup is to squeegee the shower glass after every shower. The easiest way to get into this habit is to keep a squeegee in the shower with you as a reminder and so it's in easy reach.

To take that tip to the next level you can try wiping the shower glass with a cloth or towel (that you're not using to dry yourself) to really remove excess water and soap residue.

A woman named Trace showed how well the product worked on eight years of build up on her shower glass in a Tiktok and said it's the only thing that's ever worked.

"Been renting this place for 5 years I tried everything to no avail until now," the text on her TikTok video read.

"Definitely the best thing I ever tried on shower glass," she added in the caption.
