The little-known $11 buy that transformed a discoloured shower floor back to white

A shower floor discoloured from heavy hard water buildup has been restored thanks to a little-known product.

The transformation was shared on Reddit by a man from Germany who thanked the CleaningTips forum for recommending the product to him.

He posted before-and-after photos showing the shower floor going from yellow to white. It also looks like a little discolouration from the tiles was also removed.

"Totally hyped from bkf," he titled the post, revealing that Bar Keepers Friend is the product responsible for the clean shower floor.

"Thank god I found this sub. From now on I am also a huge fan of bar keepers friend! Thanks from Germany for your recommendation here! The cleaning took me 40 minutes and a bit of sweat," he said.

The product used was Bar Keepers Friend's cleanser and polish powder, which costs $10.80 at Coles, $10.99 at Bunnings and $8.70 at Woolworths. It is still largely unfamiliar to many Australians though extremely popular in the US.

Those who saw the Reddit post were stunned by the changes to the shower floor.

"I'm shocked by the before! That was really needed," one said.

"Damn….. That was one hell of a transformation there OP (original poster). CONGRATS!!!!!" a Redditor wrote.

"That would have been so satisfying to clean," one commented.

"Wow! You've given my hope for my tub/shower!" another said.

Bar Keepers Friend cleanser and polish can be used on stainless steel, tiles, porcelain and chrome surfaces. It's a non-bleach formula containing oxalic acid that removes rust, tarnish and hard water stains, among others.

However, the powder does contain abrasive ingredients so it's worth patch testing in a small area before cleaning the entire surface.

The powder needs to be sprinkled on a damp surface and then rubbed with a wet cloth, to make a kind of paste. Once the surface is clean then rinse and dry with a cloth.

The same product also worked wonders on an old frying pan professional cleaner Brandon Pleshek picked up at an op shop for a few dollars. He shared the transformation in a TikTok video.

The pan was covered in burnt on grease stains so Pleshek tried Bar Keepers Friend on one side of it to show how well the product worked.

He sprinkled the powder on the pan and used a damp sponge to turn it into a paste to cover the surface with.

Instead of scrubbing straight away he left the product to sit for a while first. After scrubbing he wiped the pan clean and after then did the other side.

"The key here is to give it time, so I gave it about 10 minutes to really break down that grease and grime that's just baked and burnt on this pan," he said, adding that it made the grime "just melt away".

Bar Keepers Friend cleanser and polish also comes in a cream cleanser version, which can be easier to use as there is no powder that needs mixing into a paste.

It was recently recommended by home hacks guru Jacqueline Stein for polishing a stainless steel sink.

She shared the tip in an Instagram reel about common mistakes people make when cleaning the kitchen sink.

"But here's the game-changer most people mess up: the WRONG polish + wrong amount = fading, fogging, and micro-scratches," she said.

"Use the right stainless steel polish and let it sit for 10+ minutes (yes, really!)."
