Hidden filth lurking in little-known part of the kitchen sink you should be cleaning

I thought I was already quite thorough when it came to cleaning and polishing my kitchen sink – I even scrub inside the drain.

So I was surprised to see a professional cleaner tackle a part of the kitchen sink I'd never considered cleaning or acknowledged the existence of.

That part is the rim around the entire sink, which is one of those hidden spots that collects a surprising amount of dirt from all the activity that goes on around it.

And like all tiny crevices in the home, the best tool to clean it with is an old toothbrush.

Cleaning the kitchen sink rim is relatively easy and done by scrubbing with some warm soapy water.

As soon as I started scrubbing I saw the soapy water turn brown – a sure sign the cleaning process is working.

I thoroughly scrubbed under the rim around the sink until I had done a full lap, before wiping it to remove the cleaning product.

But I think this kitchen sink rim has been so neglected it might never actually be clean, because after drying it by running a microfibre cloth around the rim there was still more dirt on the cloth.

That doesn't mean it's not worth doing, because keeping on top of it will stop it getting dirtier.

It also means any water that splashes around the sink won't be exposed to as much of the dirt lurking under there.

This part of cleaning the sink probably doesn't need to be done that often and would be OK to do once a month while you're giving the sink a thorough polish and clean.

The monthly sink deep clean is when I like to also clean inside the drain using a small bottle brush cleaning tool and scrub the plug hole with a toothbrush.

I tend to top that off with a good polish of the sink so it shins nice and bright.

Of course, you can time that deep clean to whatever suits you depending on your lifestyle and needs by doing it fortnightly or every two months.
