Professional cleaner's clever trick for removing trapped hair from a vacuum roller brush head

We use vacuums regularly to clean every floor of the house, but a lot of us probably don't pay as much attention to cleaning the appliance itself.

But keeping our vacuums clean means they work more efficiently, aren't spreading germs back around the home and it makes them last longer.

While emptying dust and dirt from the barrel and rinsing the filter are easy enough to do, the vacuum head is a particularly tricky spot to tackle.

That's because it is usually filled with hair, fluff and threads that gets trapped between the little brush fibres, and the only way to get them out is to sit down and remove them.

To do this many people reach for a pair of scissors, which works, but takes a little time and patience.

But there is an easier way according to a janitor and self-proclaimed 'clean freak' Brandon, who posts his tips on the TikTok channel @cleanthat up.

Instead of using scissors, Brandon prefers to remove trapped hair from his vacuum head using a seam ripper and showed how in a video.

"I've found the seam ripper works better than a knife or scissors because it can get underneath the hair much easier to pull it up and cut," he said in the caption.

To remove hair, Brandon takes the seam ripper, sticks it in behind a clump of hair and pulls it straight out. Then you can easily remove the untangled hair and threads using your hands.

"Once I get all the big stuff out, now I'm going to run the vacuum. Much better," he said.

Brandon's followers loved his trick, which has been viewed more than 25,000 times.

"Never thought of getting my seam ripper out... I use a [letter opener]! I got it as a promo item from a realtor, works perfectly," one commented.

While it's inevitable you'll need to clean out the hair and threads from your vacuum cleaner, there is something you can do to prevent huge clumps of hair getting trapped in the brush roller.

It might seem odd, but squeegeeing your carpet before vacuuming it will get a lot of hair, both human and pet, from carpet fibres.

All you need to do is grab a squeegee – you can use a hand held one and get down on your hands and knees, or use a squeegee attached to a long handle – and run it over your carpet like you would with a broom.

Then you'll have a pile of hair that you can pop in the bin and it won't end up in the brush roller head.
