This jewellery cleaning transformation is a reminder of just how gross silver pieces get

We often put on jewellery without a second thought for all the dirt and grime it picks up as we go about our day.

And let's not forget the tarnish that can leave beautiful silver pieces looking a little tired.

Well, you'll not likely forget again after seeing the gross residue that lifted from some second-hand pieces one woman recently cleaned.

Dani Dawn cleaned her new bracelets, charm bangle, watch strap and rings using items most of us have at home and filmed the results for a TikTok video.

To clean the jewellery, Dani covered a bowl with aluminum foil and then added baking soda (also called bicarb soda), salt and boiling water from a kettle.

Once the mixture was in the bowl, she started dropping in each of the jewellery pieces and when they were all in there she gave the bowl a gentle shake.

It wasn't long before the water started changing colour and little bits of gunk lifted off.

After gasping, Dani said, "Look how dirty it's changing. Oh my God, it's so dirty. I can't believe how dirty that is."

The colour of the water at the end of the process was cloudy black and particularly dark around the watch strap.

"Thrifty girlies, let this be your reminder to clean your second hand jewellery! I'm so glad I gave mine a proper clean and polish today," she captioned the video.

There were more cleaning tips for jewellery in the comments section, including some from people who have worked at jewellery stores and use the same method.

"This is how I used to cleanse jewellery when I worked at the jewellers. Try putting the jewellery in before the hot water and let the bubbles do its thing," a woman said.

"Also tried and old toothbrush works better comes out shinier just remember to rinse it a few times after you scrub it with the toothpaste," commented one.

"Let letric soda better in my opinion (Working in jewellers)," a woman wrote.

"Dull side of the foil works better I've found," another recommended.

There were also a couple of suggestions to try an ultrasonic cleaner which can speed up the process.
