Cult $18 Bunnings buy melts years of grease and grime from woman's rangehood filters

A woman who regularly cleans her rangehood filters discovered just how much grease and grime was trapped in them after soaking them in a bucket of Tricleanium.

The Bunnings product costs $18.15 for a 1kg pack and though it first hit the market for use in painting preparation in 1954, it's become a huge sensation over the past year for its effectiveness as a cleaner.

So much so, the woman who posted about her rangehood filter transformation in the Facebook group Mums Who Clean said she'd been searching for Tricleanium for months and finally found it in stock.

"Monthly I take my rangehood filters out and clean them with hot soapy water, thinking that's great there nice and clean," she said.

But that was before she tried cleaning them with Tricleanium by popping them in a bucket filled with the product diluted by water.

The cleaner managed to remove so much grime the water in the tubs turned a disgusting greasy mess.

She hinted the rangehood filters may have built up more than a couple of years' worth of filth before she moved in.

"Well, no they were not clean. This house was built in the 70s and I have been here a couple of years," she said.

Based on what melted off the rangehood filters, the woman said she thinks they need another soak in a bigger bucket, but remains impressed by the results so far.

"Holy cow what a transformation, they probably could do with replacing but finding replacement for this age rangehood could be hard. So to whoever posted originally about this product you are a legend. And if you have an older home get on to this stuff," she said.

The Facebook post prompted a discussion about Tricleanium and how best to use it for cleaning rangehood filters.

One common piece of advice was a reminder to give anything cleaned with Tricleanium a good rinse afterwards, which is actually advised in the cleaning instructions on the brand's website.

The members of Mums Who Clean also advised that rangehood filters shouldn't be soaked for too long in the product and that five minutes was long enough.

Overall there was plenty of praise for the product for use on rangehood filters and other items.

"I always clean my range hood with this, also my oven racks," commented one.

"I put mine (rangehood filters) in the bath tub. Great result! It's a great product. Might actually do mine today," a woman wrote.

"This stuff was amazing on our orange, cigarette stained walls and ceiling," another said.
