Expert's verdict on $3 pantry hack that claims to refresh rugs and carpets
An expert has weighed in on whether a popular hack for removing odours from rugs is actually worth doing.
The version of the hack most commonly seen on TikTok involves sprinkling baking soda (also called bicarb soda), which you can find at the supermarket for less than $3, on a rug or carpet and then vacuuming it up.
Sometimes the method involves working the baking soda into the rug fibres with your hands, other times it is just left to sit, either way the baking soda is left for about 15 minutes to absorb any smells.

While Liza Garrison, director of product at rug brand Ruggable, is a fan of the hack, she revealed the correct technique for getting it right.
"First, hang the rug flat, not folded, in an airy room with plenty of ventilation. If it is an indoor rug, make sure it is hung inside to dry out to protect the vibrancy of the colours," she said.

"Next, sprinkle baking soda generously over the entire surface. Baking soda is a powerhouse when it comes to absorbing odours. Let it sit for several hours, or even overnight, to absorb the mustiness.
"Then, vacuum the rug thoroughly to remove the baking soda along with the trapped odors. This method is gentle yet effective, restoring your rug's freshness without the use of harsh chemicals."

However, the expert said the best way to keep the rug free of odours rugs should be vacuumed weekly.
Rotating rugs every few months and using a rug pad underneath also help keep the fabric fresh and odours at bay.
But baking soda isn't enough to deep clean a rug, instead you'll need to use a carpet cleaner with a shampoo designed for rugs.
"Be sure to follow the manufacturer's instructions carefully to protect your rug's fibers and prevent damage," Garrison said.
"To air dry your rug once washed we recommend drying your rug indoors in an airy space for the best protection as exposure to the sun's UV rays can bleach your rug and cause it to overheat, which will affect the condition of the colours and fibres."
