Five DIY homewares you can decorate the house with for Christmas using a Cricut machine

Christmas decorating isn't just about the tree and lights anymore, these days the trend is to add festive touches all over the house to spread the festive cheer.

But rather than buying a Christmas-themed cushion or door mat, why not make your own? Then you can personalise it to your individual needs and style, and have something unique.

A Cricut machine can help crafters to make their own Christmas décor and decorations by cutting designs out of cardstock and iron-on materials for you to use in your projects.

Cricut's Design Space app also has plenty of projects ready to make, which you can customise, or you can create your own.

Here are five Christmas decoration project ideas to get you started:

Cushion covers

There's something about a cushion or pillow arrangement on a couch or bed that just makes it look cosier. You can add a touch of Christmas to your favourite comfy spot by making your own cushion cover.

Using a plain cushion cover, or if you're really crafty you can sew your own, select a Christmas phrase or image from the Design Space app. Then use the Cricut machine to cut that design out of iron-on vinyl, remove the excess vinyl and attach to the cover or case using a heat press.

If you want to start with a pre-made Cricut project the Naughty and Nice pillows are a good option, and will give a cheeky pop of colour to your holiday décor.

Coasters

Christmas often means guests popping over, whether it's for drinks or the all-important lunch on the big day. That usually means setting the table with a festive tablecloth, serviettes, placemats and more.

One easy DIY project you can make yourself is coasters, which look even more professional when made with infusible ink. This special ink transfers the design into the material it's applied to, such as ceramic in the case of coasters.

Cricut has a cute Gingerbread House design to make using infusible ink and ceramic coasters. This project also has an additional element, as it is designed to be placed on a name card made of cardstock. So you won't just end up with Christmas coasters, but name cards for table settings.

Door mat

Make guests feel welcome to your holiday gathering before they've even stepped foot in the door with a Christmas-themed door mat.

Once you've chosen a design in the app, Cricut will cut the image or words out of vinyl. Then you remove the negative space with a weeding tool to make a stencil. Next place the stencil on the mat stencil and apply the design with spray or acrylic paint.

Paper flowers

Save yourself a trip to the florist and use the Cricut to cut out all the shapes you need to make paper flowers. There are several festive flower project ideas in the Cricut app, including poinsettias. But you can easily make any paper flower or plant a Christmas one by changing the colour of the cardstock you use.

If you want something a bit more striking and showstopping, then you can't go past the stunning detail of the Succulent Tree Door Hanging project. This features intricate cardstock flower and succulents arranged on a chipboard base.

If flowers aren't your thing, Cricut has other projects that feature cardstock and paper, including a Christmas village.

Tree decorations

Of course, you can't decorate for Christmas without the tree. With Cricut you can make all kinds of ornaments, from personalised baubles to paper decorations and felt animals that you sew together.

One bright and fun option is the Yarn-wrapped ornament project in the Design Space App. It involves cutting festive shapes out of chipboard and then wrapping the shapes with yarn wound in different directions.
