Dietitian reveals the best supermarket soups to stock up on this winter
The sudden drop in temperature means that it is certainly soup season and while a steaming bowl of homemade soup is as nutritious as it is delicious, you may not always have the time, or the energy to make soup from scratch.
The good news is that there is a growing range of supermarket soups that fare pretty well nutritionally – with ingredient lists that contain little other than the stock and base ingredients, it is hard to argue that homemade is actually better nutritionally.
And for those cooking for just one or two, these pre-made soups can also be an extremely cost-effective option.
Here are my top picks of the season.
Dari's Beef and Barley Soup
With a base of 13 per cent beef, this is one of the highest protein, lowest calorie soups you can find, and with a relatively low amount of added salt for a pre-made soup.
Pitango Minestrone Soup
Made with 49 per cent vegetables, with no added sugars, a clean ingredient list and less than 100 calories per serve, you cannot go past this vegetable-based soup as a light meal or filling accompaniment to lunch or dinner.
Woolworths Chunky Vegetable Soup
Relatively low in added salt for a pre-made soup, low in calories and with a good amount of fibre, this is another soup option to complement any meal.
Coles Kitchen Chicken & Corn Soup
With a massive 17g of protein per serve thanks to the 20 per cent chicken base, more than 6 grams of dietary fibre and a controlled amount of added salt, you can't go past this for a filling, protein rich meal on the go.
Coles Perform Mexican Style Beef and Bean Soup
A soup that offers a complete meal thanks to the balanced amounts of carbs and protein, you also get a massive 14 grams of dietary fibre with this fresh soup option.
Amy's Kitchen Organic Lentil Soup
One of the only canned soup options with an ingredient list that features all natural, unprocessed ingredients.
LaZuppa Rustic Vegetable and Bean Soup
A pouch option with 100 per cent natural ingredient list and relatively low amounts of salt for a packaged soup, this vegetable rich soup is a low-calorie meal addition.
