'Smart' plate knows everything you eat, and when

In 2001, Anthony Ortiz and his siblings watched their dad suffer through gruelling triple-bypass surgery to address a number of ongoing health issues.

"That was one of the scariest moments in my family's time," he says.

"What really bothered us the most as a family was to discover later that his entire condition could have been completely avoidable, had he just followed a strict dietary guideline and been a little more active."

For Ortiz, the founder and CEO of Philadelphia-based tech company Fitly, the solution to the burgeoning obesity epidemic is simple — and he's created the plate to prove it.

The SmartPlate is touted as "the first connected plate that instantly tracks and analyses everything you eat".

The company are currently running a Kickstarter campaign to raise funds to produce a limited number of "alpha-prototypes" of the SmartPlate, with hopes of making the final version available for purchase by the public in 2016.
