Team Coach

Welcome to the 9Honey Sleep Diaries where we get people to share their sleep habits. From what puts them to sleep to what ruins their sleep, everyone's got a sleep story...

Next up we have Sam Wood, husband, father-of-three and founder of 28 by Sam Wood. Wood knows the benefits of a good night's sleep, even if his two youngest daughters don't.

What time do you start to wind down for bed?

Usually at about 10pm.

Do you have a pre-bed ritual?

I try to spend some quality time and have a good conversation with Snez once the kids are in bed. About half an hour before going to bed I get off devices and avoid blue light. I sometimes have a hot shower, too. That all takes about an hour, so I'm usually in bed around 11pm.

Who shares your bed?

It's a family affair! Obviously Snez, but we have a visitor named Willow about three times a week.

What time do you wake up?

Charlie wakes up at 6am, rain, hail or shine, so we're all up with her.

What disturbs your sleep?

The kids. I'm a heavy sleeper – heavier than Snez – but when you've got young children you don't sleep quite the same.

What do you listen to?

There's nothing I really listen to at the end of the day. At one point, I tried to meditate before bed, but it suits me better to get that in during the day.

What's your tip for getting a good sleep?

Stability and structure. Try not eat heavy foods within a couple of hours of going to sleep, stay hydrated during the day, and sleep in a dark, quiet, cool room — that's a bit of a sticking point with Perth-born Snez. And you should always give yourself that wind-down period.

What's your sleep position?

I sleep on my side, but as I get older I'm trying to sleep on my back more.

What do you wear to bed?

Boxers.

What do you dream about?

I dream quite a bit, but I don't remember much about them when I wake up.

Do you do anything to help you sleep better?

That wind-down period. I haven't ever had much trouble with sleeping, so I've never tried anything special like supplements.

What gets you out of bed in the morning?

The Charlie alarm clock – it's loud and clear.

Do you set an alarm?

Out of habit I still do. It gets set for 6.30am, but I don't think I've woken up to it in three years. Snez thinks it's hilarious.

Do you snooze?

Every now and then on the weekend. I love falling asleep with Willow in her bed for a late morning nap.
