Virgin founder Richard Branson lays out his vision for the future of fitness

Sam Downing

You always seem to run into someone you know when you're at the gym — and this Friday I ran into billionaire businessman and Virgin founder Richard Branson.

Immediately after the workout he quick-changed back into his regular clothes before I'd even had a chance to wipe the sweat off my face, then briefed the media on Virgin Active's plans to open four more Sydney clubs in 2019 (with more locations around Australia in the next five years).

Branson told Coach that not everyone wants or can afford to exercise in a gym, which is why Virgin Active is launching a digital fitness program in 2019 that will provide guided workouts, yoga and meditation.

That will coincide with Virgin Active-led personal training and group exercise sessions in parks, beaches and other outdoor spaces in Sydney and Melbourne.

Though technology is often blamed for making humans more unhealthy, Branson explained how he believes it can actually make us fitter — as well as talking about the new workout he's added into his daily exercise routine, and how he's training to travel into space with Virgin Galactic in the coming months.
