A naturopathic doctor has revealed the three main things you should do next time you're feeling blocked up and need relief.

The video has racked up a whopping 4 million views, and includes some very interesting solutions.

According to Dr Bowring, these habits will get your bowels loose in no time.

1. Eat more figs

The more figs you eat, she says, the less constipation you will experience.

"Figs are fantastic, loaded with fibre, fabulous to help with that constipation," she reveals.

About 3 to 5 figs provide five grams of fibre, or about 20% of your recommended daily intake. While they can be enjoyed fresh or dried, be careful that any dried varieties don't contain too much added sugar.

It's recommended not to eat too many figs to relieve constipation, or you may end up having the opposite result.

2. Drink more water

We definitely don't need to tell you that drinking water is good for you – we've all been hearing it for decades.

But Dr Bowring insists that it's one of the most crucial factors in staying regular: "Of course, you need to be properly hydrated with good quality water to keep things moving."

Water is vital for many aspects of body functioning. About half our blood is "blood plasma", which is over 90 per cent water. Eight cups (or two litres) a day is often mentioned as the amount of water we should aim for and a nice way to track your intake.

3. Taking a shot of oil

Finally, Dr. Bowring recommends drinking your coffee with a shot of olive oil in it.

"This is a recipe that I shared - you're going to love this. It helps with weight loss as well," she said.

The doctor pointed to a 2018 study which showed having extra olive helped reduce body fat and blood pressure in women.

She also referenced a study from 2015 that showed the efficiency of olive oil in easing constipation.

Black coffee is a great way to get things moving.

Research published in the Journal of Renal Nutrition in 2015 showed that all you need is one teaspoon a day of olive oil to help relieve becoming blocked up.

But instead of swigging your olive oil straight from the bottle, Dr. Bowring swears by olive oil coffee.

Of course, most of us are already pretty familiar with how great black coffee is at simulating bowel movements.

However, commenters on the doctor's TikTok were less than impressed with this suggestion. "Olive oil in coffee is crazy, instant diarrhea," one person wrote.

Another had their own suggestion: "Try ghee in coffee. Make sure you're drinking the coffee on the toilet."
