How to fortify your immune system before winter strikes

Team Coach

Winter is coming, which means cold, flu and seasonal blues are coming.

Dr Penny Adams provides some advice on fortifying your immune system before it's too late. First, the basics: wash your hands and (in Adams' words) "be considerate" with your coughing and sneezing.

Staying active and eating a healthy diet will also fortify your immune system ahead of winter. It's also not necessary to buy supplements — fruit and vegetables will provide the required nutrients, including the ever-popular vitamin C.

Adams offered a reminded that supplementing with vitamin C isn't as effective as most people think, and may have a little-known consequence for women: "Vitamin C boluses can interfere with your contraceptive pill absorption."

Dodging dry skin that turns you into a human reptile is also simple: moisturise, and resist the temptation to take long, hot showers.
