What your hair, skin and nails are trying to tell you about your diet

If your diet isn't so great, you'll feel pretty lousy — but that's not the only sign your body needs more nutrients.

Common maladies are often rooted in poor nutrition: think things like dry, cracked nails; raised red bumps on your skin; thinning hair; pimples; and dark circles under your eyes.

According to nutritionist Dr Joanna McMillan, fixing your diet won't automatically solve everything — but it'll help your body work at its best.

Appearing on Today, McMillan runs through some of the foods that will address common nutrient deficiencies — including iron and zinc — and the good news they're all produce available in everyday supermarkets.

"Be careful with supplements … only take a supplement if your doctor has diagnosed you [with a deficiency]," she said.
