Hannah Camplin suffered cardiac arrest two days after welcoming baby Sofia

Hannah Camplin’s loved ones face a potentially year-long wait for answers after the 36-year-old suffered a cardiac arrest in hospital after giving birth.

The West Australian reports that Camplin, partner of former AFL great Mark Hutchings, died on September 9 following what had been described as a straightforward pregnancy.

Her sister Lucy Heke said Camplin had been able to spend precious time with baby Sofia before her death and appeared happy as she settled into life as a new mum.

“Sofia is absolutely beautiful, and Hannah had taken to motherhood like a duck to water, she just looked very happy and content,” Heke told the publication.

Exactly what caused Camplin’s death remains unclear.

“The initial investigation was inconclusive, it could be a year before they can get the full reasoning as to what happened,” Heke said.

As the family waits for further findings, Heke said they were drawing comfort from Sofia and surrounding the baby’s father, former West Coast premiership player Mark Hutchings, with support.

“Us, and Mark’s family, and are supporting each other and supporting Mark,” Heke said.

Hutchings shared news of Camplin’s death on Instagram on Thursday night, revealing their daughter had been born only two days earlier.

“It is with deep sadness that I share the sudden loss of my beautiful partner Hannah,” he wrote.

“Two days following the birth of our daughter, Sofia.

“I am shattered…Her dream was to become a Mum, so it’s been incredibly difficult to take.

“Sofia and I love you and will miss you very much Hannah.”

The 35-year-old has since received an outpouring of support from former teammates, players and their families.

“You’ll be the best Dad for your beautiful daughter…we got you,” former West Coast teammate Nic Naitanui wrote.

Jack Darling’s wife Courtney added: “(We’ve) been thinking of you everyday Hutch, no words will ever be enough.”

Close friend Jarred Briotti, whose son was born three weeks before Sofia, said the two couples had been preparing to experience early parenthood together.

“Words can’t describe the past few weeks, though this man has taken to being a father like a duck to water,” he wrote.

“I am so proud of you, mate…Hannah would be looking down smiling, knowing how much you’ve got this.”

Hutchings retired from the AFL in 2021 after 120 games for West Coast, including the club’s 2018 premiership, and later moved into real estate.
