Single apple purchase prompts debate over hand-written grocery list
A husband who did his best to follow the instructions written out on a detailed grocery list says his wife labelled him a "typical man" when he purchased a single apple.
The man has shared a copy of the list on Reddit's 'Mildly Infuriating', writing: "My wife made the list, but somehow I'm the 'typical man' for only getting one apple."
On the list we see four separate categories: Produce, Meat, Dairy and Other.
Under 'produce' the man's wife has listed specific numbers of each item she'd like including two tomatoes and three cucumbers.
It was the single word 'apple' that confused the man who thought this entry meant a single apple was required.

He explained he and his wife had "discussed eating healthier" and specifically talked about doing "salad options for the week" so he assumed the apple was going to be sliced as a topping or a side.
The husband added: "Apples are not a common snacking item/ingredient in our house. While she will buy them every once in awhile, more often they're purchased for a recipe, in which case we typically need 1-2, depending on the recipe."
She wanted "Chobani" yoghurt, "soft" cream cheese and "Dave's" toast-sliced bread.

One Redditer pointed out the "inconsistencies" on the list were want resulted in the confusion.
Another questioned the existence of "red" olives which the husband explained that was his wife's way of describing Kalamata olives.
"Did she also want 1 shallot," one asked. The husband confirmed that she did indeed want a single shallot.
One woman commented: "Guess I'm a typical man too bc I would have gotten one. My husband will be surprised."

"I would have bought one apple as well," an autistic Redditer explained. "FWIW I'm autistic, and as it only says 'apple' and the rest of the list is very specific, the assumption would be that 'apple' was also specific."
"Let us know how many apples it takes to fill your trunk next trip to the store op," one Redditer joked.

"Are you young? I've been married for 16 years and would have bought a few apples, just in case. Nobody wants just one apple. Especially since they are cheap and I can default to 'I wanted them as a snack,'" another explained.
In defence of the single apple purchase, one Redditer explained: "I am constantly buying just one apple lmao. I don't eat them quick enough for them to stay crisp under my care, so one at a time does the trick. OP just doesn't eat a lot of apples, I guess."
"Not one to interfere in marital affairs, but I make you correct as the list say tomato x2 cucumber x3 red onion x2 and so on, but apple no numbers next to it," another said.
