UK incoming Grazia editor Hattie Brett sends tweet calling Oscar winners ‘fat’

A UK journalist who is about to take on the role of Editor at a leading magazine title has apologised after tweeting that this year’s Oscar winners are “fat”.

Hattie Brett, who announced last month that she had been appointed editor of Grazia magazine, was live tweeting the Oscars during a screening when she wrote: “Controversial opinion: why are all the Oscar winners so fat?”

The tweet was deleted shortly after, but not before followers took a screengrab of the original.

When approached for comment, Brett told HuffPost UK: “When live tweeting the Oscars at a screening party, I wrote something stupid about one of the men I saw on screen.

“I instantly regretted it so deleted the tweet, hoping that, as it was the early hours of the morning, not many people would have witnessed my idiocy. However clearly some did and so I apologize unreservedly for any offense caused.”

During the show she also tweeted “Love how all the British nominees are the ones who need help for makeup.”

That tweet has remained on her account.

The controversy comes as  Brett prepares to step into her new role at Grazia, a women’s magazine with a focus on diversity and inclusion. A week ago they launched a new issue championing body positivity, which hailed women as “stronger together”.

Brett began her career with Grazia before launching lifestyle website The Debrief and then moving on to the Telegraph.

Brett’s current employer, Telegraph Media Group, has not yet commented on the tweets.
