Woman involved in GoFundMe scam says boyfriend ‘betrayed’ her

The couple who have been accused of making up a feel-good story through an elaborate GoFundMe scam have split up.

The New Jersey couple, Kate McClure and Mark D'Amico raised over $400,000USD for Johnny Bobbitt Jr., and are currently facing up to 10 years in jail over the scam.

But McClure’s lawyer has now revealed that she has parted ways with D’Amico and is accusing him of taking advantage of her during the money-making con.

"They are not living together anymore and she's not taking his calls," attorney James Gerrow told Fox 29.

When asked if he believes that D’Amico betrayed McClure the lawyer said there was: “no question about that.”

McClure’s lawyer claims she only wanted to help Bobbit, the homeless veteran who was introduced to her by her former boyfriend.

“Kate was being used by both Mr D’Amico and Mr Bobbitt,” Gerrow claims.

The couple originally said they met Bobbitt when he gave his last $20 to McClure - who was stranded on Interstate 95 in Philadelphia - so she could put petrol in her car, then started the GoFundMe as a way to thank him.

But the entire story was a lie according to Burlington Country prosecutor Scott Coffina.

Instead it’s believed the group met near a casino in Philadelphia in October 2017, weeks before they told their heart-warming story.

Bobbit was arrested on Wednesday night in Philadelphia and remained in custody on Thursday.

D’Aminco and McClure surrendered themselves to authorities on Wednesday night but were released and their attorney said they have no comment.

All were charged with theft by deception and conspiracy to commit theft by deception.

The charges carry prison time of up to five to 10 years.

Prosecutors originally began an investigation after Bobbit claimed he wasn’t getting the money that had been raised on his behalf and later sued the couple.

Asked by a reporter if the trio would have gotten away with the deception had they not begun to fight over the money, Coffina replied, “There's a good chance they might have.”

In August, Bobbit’s lawyers sued the couple for fraud and claimed the funds raised through the GoFundMe campaign were never used as promised.

Instead of using the money for a house, the couple bought him a camper van -without his consent – and kept him in it on their property with “no access to money or food” his lawyers alleged.

Bobbit’s lawyers claim he only saw $75,000 of the nearly $400,000 he was owed.

The money was put into the couple's personal accounts, his lawyers said.

The couple explained they were being cautious about giving Bobbitt large sums of money until he had a job and was off drugs.
