'I'm curious': Bizarre ice-cream flavour sells out despite initial snub from customers

An Auckland ice cream shop is proving a hit with its new salmon ice cream, selling out its unusual flavour just two weeks after it was first served to intrigued customers.

Fugitoto Ice Cream in Epsom has seen a bump in customers as locals put their taste buds to the test by trying a flavour not usually seen in New Zealand.

Shop assistant Mushan says the shop owner came up with the idea to experiment with salmon in ice cream after trialing it at their Japanese restaurant.

"They wanted to incorporate more New Zealand ingredients and thought salmon and wasabi would be a good idea to try," Mushan added.

Fugitoto uses real king salmon sourced from the South Island, which they have to order in bulk.

Mushan says it has proved popular among customers as not many people have tried salmon in ice cream before.

Reaction, however, to the idea has been mixed online, with a post on Instagram garnering a range of different views.

One person writing on Instagram found it quite "pleasant", describing the taste as "a creamy salmon dip but frozen, flaky and slightly sweet".

"Yuck!" another wrote. "Imagine the smell."

"I'm curious about the flavour but at the same time IDK if I would like it. But I'd like to give it a try if I can," a third person added.

Salmon is not the only flavour the shop has experimented with, they currently also sell flavours such as chai tea, taro, tofu, kumara, and pumpkin, which they are especially releasing for Halloween.

Fugitoto Ice Cream say they should have more salmon ice cream available come the weekend.
