Pepsi launching Back to the Future II bottle
Forget about our hoverboards. This is the moment Pepsi has been waiting nearly three decades for. The time has arrived for the soft drink company to capitalise on their product placement in 1989's Back to the Future II with the launch of a collectors' edition bottle based on the film prop.
Pepsi has announced that "the future is now", or will be in the US on October 21, when the company releases 6500 bottles of 500ml Pepsi Perfect bottles modelled on the one Marty McFly ordered in Back to the Future II. And at this point on the space-time continuum, Pepsi is made with "real sugar" and sells for US$20.15 (geddit?) rather than the US$50 director Robert Zemeckis anticipated in the film.
It's part of a huge marketing push for the franchise, with DVDs and Blu-rays of the movie trilogy and the animated series being repackaged and released on October 20, remastered console games out on October 13, a prop auction on October 24, and a panel and exhibit at New York Comic Con from Thursday.
The first 200 fans dressed as Marty McFly (the hoverboard is "optional" — as if) to visit the Pepsi Perfect booth tomorrow will get one of the collectable bottles, as will the quickest Wild Gunman draws at the convention.
