A world-famous chef has revealed the $2 item he "always" keeps in his pantry.
Whether it be seasoning your dinner with a crack of salt and pepper or a dash of olive oil heated up in a pan, there are some ingredients most households keep in stock.
For renowned chef Nelly Robinson his staple item isn't a standard condiment.

"I love cooking at home with the family, so in the pantry I've always got Mutti tomatoes because you can put it in any cuisine," he tells 9Honey Kitchen when asked what three things he thinks everyone should have in their pantry.
The 400 gram can of peeled tomatoes stored in tomato juice costs just $2.30 from Coles and Woolworths supermarkets.

From pasta sauces to soups and as a pizza topping, the ingredient can be used in a variety of quick and easy meals.
As for other pantry must-haves, Robinson, who is the executive chef of Sydney's nel restaurant, says, "You got to have a good tomato sauce, but also a good curry sauce because I have that with my chips."
With years of experience in kitchens around the world, it's safe to say the chef has picked up a few tried and tested cooking hacks here and there.

There's one hack he recommends as "one of the best" for home cooks to try.
So, what's his expert tip, you might be wondering?
His answer: preparing in advance.
"Prepare the day before to make sure that your mise en place done, get it in the fridge the night before and just cook on the day that you need to cook," he says.
To elevate your home cooked meals, there's two things you need to pay attention to according to the chef: the ingredients you use and the utensils you eat it with.

"It's always ingredients," Robinson says, explaining to make sure you use "the best produce that you can possibly get".
"Spend a little bit more on plate ware cos that fancy food will always look good on a fancy plate," he also suggests.
After a day of work, you might not want to spend hours in the kitchen preparing dinner.

So, for those you can't be bothered and just want an easy and budget-friendly meal to whip up, Robinson has one 'simple but good" dish he cooks multiple times in a week.
The chef says all you need is a piece of niche bread, endurra, hummus, and turkey breast on top and voila – dinner is served.
