McDonald's fans outraged over the new apple pie

In your daily dose of McDonald's news, fans of the fast food chain are reportedly up in arms in the U.S. over changes to their much-loved apple pie.

For those who are devotees of the dessert, the deep-fried and puffed-up pastry, filled with scalding hot chunks of apple and sweet apple sauce, the treat is a thing of great beauty. So, it's not surprising that the release of a 'healthier' version was met with a less than positive reception. After all, when you're having a Maccas apple pie, 'healthy' is not a term that's top of mind. Usually you're treating yo'self, right?

McDonald's new baked apple pie, on the menu now in the U.S.

According to reports by UKs Metro and People, the new look apple pie was released to reduce the fat and sugar content of the deep-fried original (so it kind of misses the point), and to reduce some of the ingredients. The result was the unveiling of a lower-sugar, baked version.

But, despite the good intentions, McDonald's customers in the States are outraged, and they took to twitter over the last few days to prove it.

And that's just the tame stuff...

Really, the take-away from all this should be if you're onto a good thing (like apple pies, Big Mac sauce and chicken nuggets), don't mess with the original recipe. There's a reason people try to replicate this stuff at home. It's because it's good... and as a result, people LOVE it. 

The apple pie has been no stranger to hype, controversy and adoration over the years, first with the myth that the 'apple' in the pie was mostly choko, and more recently with fans going into a flurry over the limited release of the apple pie McFlurry (see what we did there?), and again when they added the item to the menu for real. 

Let's just hope no such 'healthier' pie change is coming to Australia. leave our pies alone!
