Aldi releases dupe of popular Lindt bunny that is less than half the price

We all know Easter eggs are more expensive this year – and smaller due to 'shrinkflation' – so people are looking at ways to cut back.

You only need to look at the supermarket aisles still heaving with Easter concoctions to know people aren't buying as many this year.

But Aldi has seemingly come to the rescue with a dupe of one of the most loved Easter offerings of all time – and one taste-tester thinks it is even better than the original.

Aldi has released a range of 100 gram Choceur sitting bunnies in three varieties – dark chocolate, milk chocolate and white chocolate.

They are on sale for $4.99 and closely resemble the famed Lindt Easter gold bunny.

Lindt Easter gold bunny 100 gram varieties are selling for $12 this year, although Woolworths currently have them on sale for $8 – which is 30 per cent off.

They also have the dark chocolate, milk chocolate and white chocolate varieties as well as a salted caramel and hazelnut variety.

Instagram page Wholesalers decided to compare the two bunnies over the weekend, writing, "Easter chocolate prices are a little wild this year, so we thought we'd check out Aldi's range to see how it compares.

"First up... a 100g dark chocolate bunny."

Over a series of slides, Wholesalers then compared the two.

First was price point. With Lindt retailing for $12 and the Aldi version coming in at $4.99 – that makes Aldi's version 58 per cent cheaper.

Next, they looked at ingredients. Lindt has cocoa mass, sugar, cocoa butter, emulsifer (soy lecithin) and flavouring, which combined brings the total sugar per 100 grams to 37 grams.

Aldi's version contains cocoa mass, sugar, cocoa butter, emulsifer (soy lecithin) and natural vanilla flavour, and had a total sugar per 100 grams of 40.2 grams.

While many assume Lindt is made in Switzerland, many of its products, including the famed Easter bunny, are made in Germany, as is the Aldi version.

Next, they compared the look, and most importantly the taste.

"To us, these two products taste comparable. The Aldi bunny is slightly sweeter, slightly bigger and has a thinner chocolate layer," the said.

This weekend, nine.com.au staffer Amy was excited to spot the Aldi bunny in her local store and bought one for her husband to try.

"I saw a post online about the Aldi and Lindt bunnies basically having the same ingredients – and the dupe being less than half the price, so I had to try it out," she said.

"My husband is the biggest sweet tooth so I figured he would be the perfect judge of whether it's actually good or not.

"I cracked it open and gave him some. I explained it was basically a Lindt bunny – just way cheaper," she said.

His verdict? "He loved it," she said, adding he liked it "way more than Lindt".

"Lindt is so overrated for what it is, this is actually so much nicer," he told her.

Meanwhile, Amy prefers the Lindt version, which has a thicker chocolate shell which she believes makes it a far superior Easter egg.

So there you have it. But be warned: They might not be easy to find. I visited several Aldi's over the weekend looking for another of their Easter products – the DairyFine Hazelnut Milk Chocolate Mini Eggs 150 grams, which retail for $3.99, but could not find any.

And some stores, such as the Aldi store in Eastgate Bondi Junction, only had a very small amount of Easter eggs left.

Choceur is Aldi's premier chocolate range and consists of the "finest European chocolate, expertly crafted for your whole family to enjoy".

"Choceur chocolate is made of the finest ingredients, carefully selected and prepared by our chocolatiers [who] use a fine roasting process to extract the deep and diverse aroma from the cocoa beans."

Cocoa used to produce Choceur is 100 per cent sustainable and Rainforest Alliance certified.

Just last week, Choice accused both Aldi and Cadbury of Easter shrinkflation after noticing sizes were reduced while prices rose or stayed the same.

Among the worst culprits were varieties of Cadbury dairy milk hollow eggs, with 18-packs replaced this year with 15-packs, and prices rising substantially in the past two years.

Meanwhile, Aldi was found to have increased the price of its DairyFine solid eggs by 33 per cent.
