KFC to release fried-chicken-and-doughnut burger in America

After teasing the idea on Twitter last year, KFC has announced the official rollout of its "Chicken & Doughnuts" menu items in the US.

"Chicken & Doughnuts is the newest fried chicken trend we're bringing to all of America," Andrea Zahumensky, the chief marketing officer at KFC US, said in a press release. "It's a finger lickin' good dish filled with glaze and glory."

When tested in September, the idea caused a viral sensation, with Twitter being whipped up into a frenzy of discussion about the unique pairing.

"It's a heart attack in a burger," said one commenter, with another adding: "Will they be handing our defibrillators with this?"

Others loved the idea, declaring, "Take my money, take it all!" and, "This just might be the greatest invention ever. KFC, I salute you."

The epic (and highly caloric) combination is available to purchase in both a burger and a basket, with prices ranging between $5.49 (AUD $8.30) to $7.99 (AUD $12.10).

The burger option features a fillet of boneless fried chicken sandwiched between two fresh glazed doughnuts, while the basket is a deconstructed version of the sandwich, with boneless or bone-in chicken and one or two doughnuts.

Beginning February 24, Kentucky Fried Chicken & Donuts will be available at participating restaurants in the US for a limited time only.

If you're headed Stateside any time soon and want to try one of these bad boys, get yourself to a KFC before March 16 to try the sweet-and-savoury combo for yourself.

If you want to take your obsession to the next level, KFC also plans to open a pop-up shop called "The Colonel's (Chicken &) Donuts Shop" this weekend, where they'll be flinging free chicken and doughnuts to the first 50 people lining up on Saturday, February 22, in the donut capital of the world – Los Angeles.
