Italy welcomes its first nudist restaurant—are we sensing a trend here?

First there was the chocolate snorting trend, which we'd all rather forget happened. Now an Italian restaurateur has turned the taboo dial up a notch with naked eating, a trend fast becoming the next big thing (or little thing—no one's judging, bro) in European dining.

It might sound like a new health fad—"naked eating" certainly wouldn't seem out of place alongside the clean eating or raw eating movements; that is until you actually partake in the confronting dining experience yourself.

L'Italo Americano, Italy's first and only nudist restaurant, recently opened its doors near Milan on the back of London's successful naked dining summer pop-up Bunyadi.

For wannabe diners, there's only one rule: upon entry, you're expected to completely ditch every item of clothing and device on your person—that is, everything bar a purse or clutch for the ladies and a pouch for cash for the gents. But that's it.

Clothing ban aside, the venue steers well away from kinky territory with its contemporary fit-out, going for a speak-easy vibe with dim lighting, The Godfather pin-ups, and a modern charcoal and red colour scheme. Oh, and did we mention the dining area transforms into a disco floor at midnight?

The food is a curious mix of American and Italian classics, with many dishes named after famous American mafia bosses, including Al Capone paccheri pasta and Penne Gambino with vodka. Perhaps the best part of it all—diners don't have to worry about flecks of red sauce raining down on crisp white shirts as they slurp up saucy strands of spaghetti.

Those concerned about how many other naked bums had spent an evening at their table can rest easy –the restaurant hands out fresh white cotton towels for diners to sit on.
