9Honey Kitchen Hacks: The easy ice cube tray sushi hack

Jane de Graaff

My kids love sushi. I love sushi. But I don't always have time to make the sticky rice that holds together to make the sushi bites and rolls they love. So I'm thrilled to share one of my favourite kitchen tricks for today's 9Honey Kitchen Hacks — ice cube tray sushi.

It's a neat little trick and one my kids just love. Do away with all that rolling and simply press your warm rice into an ice cube tray to make sushi bites. It's simple, it's fun, the kids can do it, and it work brilliantly with microwavable rice, saving time yet again.

Today we're using Ben's Original soy and ginger poke bowl rice, because the flavours work so well with sushi, but you can use any flavour you like. Toppings can be whatever you family loves too, so mix and match to your heart's content.

Method:

  1. Spray and line an ice cube tray with cling wrap. Cut all your toppings into small pieces for topping sushi. Press pieces of the topping into the lined ice cube tray.
  2. Microwave your rice as per the packet instructions and allow to cool a little.
  3. Press the cooked rice into the ice cube moulds on top of the toppings. Press it down firmly to help it hold together. Refrigerate until cool and then flip over and unmould, peeling off the clingfilm. Garnish with herbs and sesame seeds.
