This is what you need to know to mince garlic like a pro

We’ve all been there. Stuck in some strange kitchen facing dinner prep with a mountain of garlic to go in bolognese for 20, and not a garlic press in sight. Okay, maybe we haven’t all been exactly there, but I imagine you’ve been somewhere close.

Fact is, if you’re used to using the garlic crusher and it’s suddenly not on hand, mincing or crushing garlic can turn into a bit of a drama. But as always at 9Honey Kitchen we are here to help, and today we’ve got a lesson in easy garlic mincing 101, because there’s a simple trick that with help with the final texture.

The secret?

Salt.

Large crystals of coarse salt to be precise.

Add these to your knife-mincing process and the abrasive crystals will help with the texture of your finished mince.

How to mince garlic

What you’ll need:

  • chef’s knife
  • chopping board

Ingredients:

  • peeled garlic cloves (as many as you dare)
  • coarse salt (large crystal of sea salt work well)

Method:

  1. Squash peeled cloves.
  2. Finely slice with knife.
  3. Sprinkle with salt.
  4. Run flat blade of knife along minced garlic to crush.
  5. Continue the process until you have a mince as fine as you like and as close to a paste as you wish.
