As we get closer and closer to Easter, there's one baked good that is starting to pop up in bakeries and supermarkets across the country.

With hints of spice and sultanas all wrapped up in a ball of dough, the delectable hot cross bun is an Easter staple for many Aussie households.

The afternoon tea delight can be cooked and enjoyed in many a ways, whether it be with a chocolate twist or cut in half with a spread of butter to go with a hot drink.

But a new poll conducted in February 2025 has revealed the surprising way more than half of Aussies choose to eat the wildly popular Easter snack.

One of the biggest hot cross bun debates is whether it should be toasted or left fresh. Well, now we finally have the (controversial) answer.

The new poll from Baker's Delight surveyed 1,000 Aussies online and found 56 per cent prefer their hot cross buns fresh and as they come.

Meanwhile, 44 per cent stuck by toasting as their go-to way to eat a hot cross bun.

While Aussies seem to be pretty split on whether to toast or not to toast, Baker's Delight discovered the majority are in agreement on another way to eat hot cross buns.

The poll revealed a whopping 80 per cent eat their hot cross buns buttered.

Most (71 per cent) also prefer the taste of the traditional hot cross bun recipe, complete with currants and sultanas for a fruity twist.

Though the traditional hot cross bun comes out on top, the poll found over 12 per cent reach for the novelty flavours and 11 per cent opt for fruitless versions of the classic Easter snack.

The Baker's Delight survey comes in time for their self-declared National Hot Cross Bun Day later this week on Thursday March 13.
