Hong Kong egg waffles plot world domination—and we welcome our delicious new ruler
There's no shred of doubt left about it—Hong Kong's famous egg waffles have their sights set firmly on world domination, and if our Instagram feeds are anything to go off they may just get their way—and soon.
The Asian snack has stealthily travelled all the way from the streets of Honkers onto our social feeds and, inevitably, into the kitchens of trend-savvy cafes around the world so we can now enjoy the treat almost anywhere (there's around 8000+ posts for #eggwaffle on Instagram at the minute).
The waffle itself is made from an eggy, leavened batter, sandwiched between two hot plates with oval-shaped cells (to give it that adorable bubble-wrap finish), and nowadays the treat is available in more colours and flavours—and with more toppings—than you can rack up an Insta-like at. Watch the clip above to see some of our Instagram egg waffle favourites.
In Australia, you can track down the trendy treat in Chinatown or get fancy, next wave versions of it at Glen Iris's Baba Sus (layered with vanilla custard, berry compote and green tea ice-cream) or Sydney's Haven (think kimchi and parmesan teamed with vanilla ice-cream). But we can't to see what other egg waffle offshoots the trend will bring once its ninja-like takeover is complete.
