Guzman Y Gomez has removed a vegetarian favourite from their menu

Vegetarian fans of Guzman y Gomez are unhappy following the announcement the Mexican fast food chain is discontinuing its mushroom filling.

Providing an alternative to its many meat-based options, the filling has been a favourite among vegetarians since its launch in 2021.

GYG has confirmed the filling will be taken off menus, explaining menu items, including fillings, are regularly reviewed.

"Unfortunately our shredded mushroom filling wasn't selling enough to stay on our menu at this time," a spokesperson told 9Honey Kitchen.

"GYG are working on new menu items new in our test kitchen and we hope to have some new menu innovations for our guests to try soon!"

In a post on Instagram, the brand told fans, "Watch this space! We also recommend you take advantage of our amazing Sautéed Veggie filling with the addition of guac!"

Despite the alternative option of sautéed vegetable filling, many fans of the chain remain unimpressed with the decision to remove the mushroom filling.

"Please bring back the shredded mushroom or I have to go back on my anti-depressants," one heartbroken fan wrote.

"Removing mushrooms from the menu makes sense if sales are low, but I hope you considered overall sales," another wrote.

"For instance, my partner prefers mushrooms, while the rest of the family orders chicken and beef. Eliminating mushrooms means we can no longer dine as a family, resulting in a loss of total sales. Please guys I need my chicken nachos, mucho amor".

Another comment reads, "If you can have two chicken, two beef and a pork option, you can do better than your gross sautéed veggies for vegetarians/vegans".

On fan asked if GYG would consider replacing the shredded mushrooms with another vegetarian option, to which they replied, "Unfortunately not at this time".

GYG offers a wide range of options for fillings and toppings, flame-grilled chicken, flame-grilled Angus steak, carnitas, shredded beef brisket, seasoned ground beef and sautéed vegetables with guacamole.

Vegetarian meal options also include GYG's pico de gallo salad, other than that, they are left with their sides and sautéed vegetables.
