Footy final feeds: Tasty beef sliders with Great Northern caramelised onions

Staff Writer | Presented by IGA Liquor

When footy finals kick off, bite-sized food is king.

These cheesy beef sliders are stacked with all the good stuff – juicy patties, melted cheese and tangy pickles – but what really makes them sing is the caramelised onions slow-cooked in Great Northern.

Sweet, savoury and beer-soaked, they bring a game-day flavour hit you'll want on repeat.

Ingredients (serves ~8)

  • 500 g beef mince
  • Onion salt, to season
  • 8 slider buns, toasted
  • 8 cos lettuce leaves
  • 8 cheese slices
  • 2 large tomatoes, thinly sliced
  • Large pickles, sliced into discs
  • Burger sauce

Beer caramelised onions

  • 3 large brown onions, thinly sliced
  • ½ tbsp olive oil or butter
  • 1½ tbsp brown sugar
  • ¾ tsp salt
  • ¾ cup Great Northern beer

Method

  1. Caramelise onions. Cook onions with oil and salt on low for 15–20 mins. Stir in sugar, cook 5 mins. Add beer and simmer until deep golden. Set aside.
  2. Shape patties. Form mince into 8 equal portions.
  3. Toast buns. Grill lightly and set aside.
  4. Cook patties. Season and grill 3–4 mins each side, adding cheese after flipping. Rest for 5 mins.
  5. Assemble. Spread sauce on buns, then add lettuce, patties, tomato, onions, pickles and tops.

Enjoy alongside: A cold, crisp Great Northern.
