Facebook's breast cancer bun ban sees buns sell out

Jane de Graaff

After the outrage this morning over Facebook banning the Breast Cancer Network Australia's (BCNA) collaboration campaign with Baker's Delight, we're thrilled to announce that stores are reportedly selling out of their signature pink iced 'fun buns'. Which is good news considering 100 per cent of all fun bun sales goes to the BCNA.

Some quick backstory; the advertising campaign images used to promote the sale of the buns included 10 brave breast cancer survivors posing with buns obscuring their breasts and clearly pointing out the specific cancer that these buns will help raise awareness and research funds for. Yes, the women are partially naked, yes there's a focus on boobs in the campaign.

Despite the fact that they are non-sexual images, raising awareness for a very important cause and executed in a spirit of respectfulness, joy and deliciousness (for the pink buns), Facebook advised that the images were in breach of their nudity policy and removed them.

Outrage ensued, as you might expect, particularly considering the speed at which the images were banned while other—far more horrific—content remains online for many hours, days or indefinitely after it is reported as offensive to Facebook.

The double standard has plenty of people outraged. Particularly us here at 9Honey Kitchen, as we think breast cancer awareness and delicious iced buns are a perfectly shareable piece of content. The Today Show has been updating us this morning on how the ban was received, speaking with the women in the campaign about the positive message of the marketing.

While our own reporter, Jo Abi, shared the images on her social media, only to have it disabled by Instagram.

Thankfully Today Show host Deb Knight has not had her post deleted yet.

All we can say is that despite the outrage over the removal of these images, the media uproar and focus has had a positive knock-on-effect; we all now want to buy the delicious pink iced buns, we all know we can get them (at Baker's Delight) and as a result, stores are being inundated with keen shoppers. Some even selling out and baking more to meet high demand.

So in this instance, the ban has had the best kind of result for raising awareness around an important topic.

It's just a shame that Facebook had to tow an absurdly official line to get the exposure, rather than simply embracing what is clearly a good cause.

More pink buns please!
